Dear Photographer,

Maisonneuve, a sophisticated print and online magazine based out of Montreal, Canada, is seeking photographers worldwide to submit strong portraits of taxis, taxi drivers, and their milieu, for its upcoming Terrorism and Tourism issue.

Photographs may be colour, black and white, or anything in between.  Images may be experimental, documentary, tell a story, evoke the character of the region, or suggest a philosophy on terrorism and tourism.  Shots of taxis, their drivers, favorite hangouts and tourist spots, good luck charms, cab accessories, scars, shoes or whatever else catches your eye.

Short texts will accompany the photographs - anecdotes, car accidents, personal experience, views on tourism and terrorism, words of wisdom, etc.. Here is a list of six questions we request be asked of the taxi-drivers.

  1. What is your first name, age, city and country you live in?
  2. Is there any other job or activity you have trained for, or would rather be doing?
  3. What is the best thing that ever happened in your taxi?  The worst thing?
  4. How did you pass your taxi driver exam?  Was it difficult? Enjoyable? Scary?
  5. What is your definition of tourism? What do you think about terrorism?
  6. Where are you from?  Where would you most like to go on holiday?  Any words of wisdom?

If you have good pictures without text, or text without pictures, you may submit either on its own. Feel free to discuss other topics. Photographers can work with a writer/friend or submit their own text.

Maisonneuve is a high-end general-interest magazine similar to The New Yorker & Harper's. Published quarterly in English, it can be found in over 1,000 retail stores across Canada and in the United States (including Chapters-Indigo and Barnes and Noble locations) and, starting with this issue, select locations worldwide. Maisonneuve also has a powerful online presence. Intelligent, eclectic, slightly eccentric, cross-border & international in content, Maisonneuve is the new New Yorker of the younger generation.

If your work is selected for publication, you will receive international exposure, between $50-$100, full credit in the magazine, and ten copies of the issue packaged and mailed to friends, family, professional colleagues or anyone else of your choosing. Unfortunately, we cannot offer full financial remuneration at this time. However, all contact information will be clearly listed so that your work may be promoted through this publication.

DEADLINE: Entries and inquiries should be directed to gsellers@maisonneuve.org by Monday, April 28.

This will be an exciting artistic endeavour with a fast-growing new magazine.  Please look at our website to get a feel for Maisonneuve as a whole (print and online editions)—or consult our distribution page for a Maisonneuve-carrying bookstore near you. We think you’ll like it!
