To celebrate the launch of our Fall 2011 issue, Maisonneuve is teaming up with the mighty Literary Death Match for a night of action-packed comedic mayhem that's not to be missed!
Four writers. Three judges. Two rounds. One crown. Literary Death Match is a competitive and comical reading series featuring both famous and up-and-coming authors. It's a fun, absurdist response to the average literary reading, and it's taken the world by storm.
On October 11, Literary Death Match will make its triumphant return to Montreal! The invited readers (Katrina Best, Byron Rempel, Jason Camlot and Zoe Page) will each read their writing in seven minutes or less before an enthusiastic audience and a panel of three judges. The panel for the evening includes author/radio host Jonathan Goldstein, performer Alexis O'Hara and Said the Gramophone founder Sean Michaels.
After the readings, the judges will take turns commenting on each story. The first round of judging is based solely on literary merit and performance. The Literary Death Match finale, on the other hand, has nothing to do with literary merit, or death; it is a culmination of all things funny and ridiculous. At a recent event, the finalists threw cupcakes at Margaret Atwood's head. At others, nerf gun fights and trivia nights have erupted. But nobody knows what will happen until the night of the event, so you'll just have to wait and see.
Literary Death Match started in New York and has since become a global phenomenon, hosting events all over North America and Europe, and gaining the attention of outlets like the Guardian, the New York Times and CTV News. Past judges have included luminaries like Pulitzer Prize-winner Jennifer Egan, New Yorker editor Ben Greenman and members of Weezer.
